printed guides are required to cater to the audience does not always have connectivity and also when you are in a remote area hiking around you do not have a laptop with you.
key here is only one copy printed when one is ordered. So every print is as to upto date as possible.
Back in 2003 OSM did not exist. Wikipedia does not have consitent maps or consistent licensing. First map was rolled for Montreal, was just a bunch of gray lines interescting each other in grid format
Mapping with DEMIS Web Map server and it provides semi useful, but not necessarily extremly useful.
A standard appereance is required, so WikiTravel has developed their own iconography for their maps. Once maps are drawn, edited, and wikitravel look and feel applied, it looks great for a travel guide.
